Choose your national park day
Krka vs Plitvice from Zadar: Which National Park Should You Visit?
Two waterfall destinations, two different days. Here is how to choose the one that fits your time and interests.
The quick answer
Choose Krka if you want a shorter road journey from Zadar, a visit to Skradinski buk and free time in Skradin. Choose Plitvice if you want to make the lake landscape the main event of your day and are happy to spend more time travelling and walking.
Both offer beautiful scenery. The useful question is which itinerary you will enjoy, rather than which park wins a universal ranking.

Travel time: Krka leaves more room for Skradin
Krka is the closer option from Zadar. For an independent visit, choose Skradin or Lozovac before planning the route. The seasonal boat from Skradin is part of reaching the waterfall area, so allow time for it as well as the road journey.
Plitvice is farther inland. Keep the day free for travel and the park rather than scheduling another major attraction afterwards. Check the departure and return times of your chosen tour; total excursion duration includes much more than walking time.

Scenery and walking: waterfall circuit or lake itinerary?
At Krka, a first visit usually centres on Skradinski buk. The official walking circuit is around 1.9 km, and the park webshop suggests roughly two hours for the visit, excluding access time. This is the waterfall area, not the entire national park.
Plitvice offers a choice of lake routes. The official programmes range from shorter visits to longer circuits combining the Lower and Upper Lakes. Programme A is listed at 2–3 hours and 3.5 km; Programme H at 4–6 hours and 8.9 km. Those are examples of independent route options, not a promise that every organized tour follows them.
Plitvice is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a connected lake-and-waterfall landscape. Choose it if that broader experience is your priority. Choose Krka if a more compact waterfall visit followed by town time fits your holiday better.
Swimming: know exactly where it is allowed
Swimming at Skradinski buk waterfall is prohibited. Swimming in Plitvice Lakes National Park is also prohibited.
You can swim at the beach in Skradin town, separate from the Krka waterfall area. Our Krka excursion includes free time in Skradin, with the option of a beach swim in summer. This does not mean swimming beneath the waterfalls.
Krka’s other designated swimming locations have separate seasonal rules. They should not be confused with the Skradinski buk visit or assumed to be stops on your tour.
Which is better for children or a shorter walk?
Krka may fit better when you want a shorter transfer and a compact main sightseeing area. Even there, account for steps, uneven or wet surfaces and the journey between the entrance and the falls. A shorter route is not automatically accessible for every visitor.
At Plitvice, choose according to the actual walking programme rather than the park name alone. Ask about the route, walking distance and pace before booking. For either park, bring comfortable shoes, water and sun protection, and leave time for breaks.
Tickets and total cost
Compare the full day cost: return transport, park admission, meals, and parking or tolls if driving. Ticket prices and arrangements change with the season and visitor category. A lower advertised tour price does not by itself mean a lower total cost.
For our Krka excursion, the park ticket is included in the tour price. For either excursion, check the inclusions and admission arrangements on our tour page before booking.
Can you visit both parks in one day?
We recommend separate days from Zadar. Combining them adds road travel and leaves less time for the walking routes and viewpoints. If both are on your wish list, use one day for Krka and Skradin and another for Plitvice.
With only one spare day, decide by your priorities: Krka for the nearer waterfall-and-town combination; Plitvice for a day centred on the lake system.
