Zadar Cruise Port Guide: Getting to the Old Town and What to Do in One Day

Published October 12, 2026

Your ship is docking in Zadar and you have only a few hours ashore. Good news: the Old Town is compact, beautiful and easy to explore in one day – if you don’t lose the morning in a queue. Our local team has been showing visitors around Zadar for 15 years. Here is everything you need: where the Zadar cruise port is, how to get to the Old Town, what to see and which shore excursions are worth it.

Quick answer

Big cruise ships dock at Gaženica, about 4 km (10 minutes by car) from the Old Town. Take your cruise line’s shuttle bus if you don’t mind queuing, or a Bolt/Uber if you want to go straight away. Want to start sightseeing the moment you step off the ship? Book a tuk-tuk pickup from the port with a city tour and drop-off back at your ship.

Where is the Zadar cruise port?

Most cruise ships in Zadar dock at the Gaženica port (Luka Gaženica), Zadar’s modern passenger port about 4 km south-east of the Old Town. The cruise terminal is in the same area as the ferry terminal for the islands, so the Zadar port can be busy in summer.

Some cruise ships dock in the city port right next to the Old Town. Then you don’t need any transport – you step ashore and walk straight into the centre. Check your cruise itinerary or ask at guest services where your ship will dock.

How to get from Zadar cruise port to the Old Town

Most cruise lines organise a shuttle bus from Gaženica to the Old Town. It is the easiest option, but when thousands of passengers leave the ship at the same time, the queue can eat up a good part of your morning.

If you don’t want to wait, Bolt and Uber both work in Zadar and the ride to the Old Town takes about 10 minutes. The price depends on demand in the app, and on days with several ships in port you may wait for a driver.

Local tip

Skip the queue: tuk-tuk pickup from the port and city tour

Our favourite way to use a short stop: our eco tuk-tuk picks you up at the cruise port and you start sightseeing straight away. Your local driver-guide takes you through the Old Town highlights, tells you the stories behind them and stops wherever you want photos.

At the end we drop you back at the port – or in the Old Town, if you want to stay for lunch, shopping or a coffee on the waterfront and take the shuttle back later.

Things to do in Zadar from a cruise ship: the Old Town

Zadar’s Old Town sits on a small peninsula, so the main sights are only minutes apart on foot. In 2–3 hours you can see the essentials:

  • Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) – steps on the waterfront where the waves play music through pipes under the stone.
  • Greeting to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu) – a glass solar installation next to the Sea Organ that lights up after dark.
  • Roman Forum – the remains of the largest Roman forum on the eastern Adriatic, right in the centre.
  • St Donatus Church – the round 9th-century church that is Zadar’s symbol, next to the Forum.
  • Kalelarga – the main marble street of the Old Town, with cafés, shops and ice cream.
  • City walls (Muraj) – the Venetian walls and the Land Gate, with views over the Foša harbour.

Our tip for the order: start at the city walls and the Land Gate, walk up Kalelarga to the Forum and St Donatus, and finish at the Sea Organ – it is the best spot to sit down and listen before heading back to the ship.

Shore excursion by sea: private boat panorama and swim on Ugljan

Seen the Old Town and want to see Zadar from the sea? We organise private boat panoramas of 3 to 4 hours, tailored to your ship’s schedule. You cruise along the Zadar waterfront and over to the island of Ugljan, where you can swim in beautiful, quiet coves with crystal-clear water.

It is just you and your group – no big tour crowds – and we plan the timing so you are back well before all aboard. On some days we can even drop you off by boat right back at the Gaženica cruise port after the tour (not always possible – ask us). Send us your ship’s arrival and departure times and we will suggest a route.

Longer stop? Private shore excursion to Krka or Plitvice Lakes

If your ship stays in Zadar for most of the day, you can see one of Croatia’s famous national parks. We organise private tours from the Zadar cruise port to Krka National Park with its waterfalls, or to the Plitvice Lakes – with a private driver, door to door from your ship and back, timed around your all-aboard time.

Book early enough and we can also arrange a private licensed guide who speaks your language. Krka is the easier choice for a cruise stop (about an hour’s drive); Plitvice is further away and works best when your ship stays in port all day.

One day in Zadar: sample plans for your cruise stop

How much you can do depends on how long your ship stays in port. Two plans that work well:

  • 4–5 hours ashore: tuk-tuk pickup at the port, Old Town tour, coffee on Kalelarga, Sea Organ, drop-off back at the ship.
  • A full day in port: private Krka or Plitvice Lakes tour from the cruise port, with a guide in your language if you book early.
  • 7–8 hours ashore: Old Town in the morning, then a private 3–4 hour boat panorama with a swim on Ugljan, back at the port in good time.

Don’t miss your ship: timing tips

Plan to be back at the port at least 30–60 minutes before your all-aboard time, and allow extra time for the shuttle or traffic on busy days. Keep your cruise card, ID and the ship’s port agent number with you.

If you book with us, tell us your all-aboard time – we plan every tour backwards from it.

  • Private 3–4 hour boat panorama with a swim in the coves of Ugljan – on some days with drop-off by boat back at the cruise port.
  • Private shore excursions to Krka or the Plitvice Lakes – with a private guide in your language if you book early enough.
  • Every tour is planned around your ship’s all-aboard time.
